Thanks for this, Monte B! Good to see Jerry Douglas (a definite contender for one of my all-time top five musicians) prominently featured along with a number of other tasty treats. I'm guessing the seven-hour time difference between Colorado and here is going to limit my listening - but I guess I can always plead insomnia...

maybe it's the name Jerry - dude is not only a master of his instrument but plays with EVERYBODY, he's everywhere

Nice. Now I'm intrigued.

Any opinons on Bert Jansch? Can't say I'm familiar other than by reputation. Playing 3 nights with Neil in Oakland in a few weeks.

Bert deserves to be thought of as a seminal guitar player - he's right up there but not on my list. Got to eat now. To be continued...?

To be continued. I'm very curious to know the other 3.

I feel sad for Dire and JOTS that they don't get to experience the thrill of RT live, but, since the masses miss out, always get good seats! Upcoming fall tour in U.S. You always have a place to crash here on the central coast of California.

bluedevil - I may never find myself in a position to take you up on that hugely generous offer but I want you to know how much I appreciate it. Thank you.

Ok, you've been patient. my five, in no particular order:

Jerry Douglas
Leo Kottke
Jeff Beck
Jack DeJohnette
Richard Thompson

Masters all.

Bubbling under:
Philip Lesh (my reserve)
Jack Casady
Bela Fleck
Jerry Garcia

Have at me!

I know we've discussed your kinsman many times, but having come here with the best of the best live CREAM, I simply cannot abide absence of JBruce...well, of course I must as a friend, and certainly it is based on a few shining moments (I don't know post 69, period!), but really, the more I listen to him, the more I am amazed...GBaker of course as well, but strangely (perhaps not), I've really come to have an entirely new appreciation for EC as well.

No need WHATSOEVER to rekindle the DEAD vs CREAM (or CREAM vs whomever) thread(s), but listening to a great song sometimes, for me anyway, takes about 10-15 repetitions over a couple of months to REALLY appreciate it...something new every time at least with the greats.

And of course, having seen LeoK a number of times since the 70s (I do like his early stuff best), he is one of my favs....

In all honesty I have to admit when putting down my top guys (and they are all guys, of course) I heard the commanding Tell whisper in my ear saying 'Bruce, Bruce, what about BRUCE?' But I stick to my guns. I like JB but he doesn't slacken the jaw in the same way the others do, at least for me. If I was to narrow it down to two for absolute control of their instruments it would be Kottke for acoustic and Beck for electric.

Where are you, old friend? On the way home (holding your breath with your eyes closed)?

Sydney...have a half day here...raining so not much to do...

Yep, for me, the slack jaw reaction happens regularly, and as MidSun put it so well, it has to do with the redlight meter pinning all enveloping sound that remains "clean", AND as important, his voice (which I know is even more "personal/subjective"), AND finally, the lyrics, which with PBrown also cannot be held to Hunter-esque standards, but somehow as a reminder of my very early youth, I simply adore...there's something about the live versions of even a highly over-done tune like SOYLove and TOBraveUl that get me every time...

So, we can respectfully embrace our own, but sometime I have to send these along to you for your own indulgence (assuming you don't have the live shows from 67 and 68).

Definitely agree with you that it's all about emotional redlining, the instinctive reaction before the big brain kicks in and starts trying to analyse what just happened. Without wishing to downplay the satisfaction that comes from slower release activities like the satisfaction of a job well done, pretty much all the best things in life fall into that category.

Had to say, after sweating the flight down to Sydney since the sixth game was being played, I logged on to find the following two headlines: "Lakers destroy Celtics; force game seven" and then "rumors of series 'fix' abound; NBA needs a seven game championship" and couldn't help but think of you...looked like Bynum still didn't do much in game 6, but Pau and Kobe, and even the bench, came thru, eh?

Yep. They crushed Boston. Perkins going out early for Boston did not help things. Setting it all up for the drama of Game 7 heroics. Hope you get a chance to enjoy the same.

Here you go...

I have been transferring a lot of old master recordings to hard drive lately. Plenty of bluegrass, newgrass, etc. Have about 150GB transferred so far. Would love to share some. Get in touch.
